RETHINKING CONSTRUCTION

Critical Review

Executive Summary

Report of Rethinking Construction by the Task Force provides the process of the “Rethinking in the construction Process”. One main concern of “rethinking” of construction is the solution under section 69 of Rethinking Construction (1998) which provides “An end to reliance on contracts”, this result in the absence of legal contract law. The consequences of this may result in the greater difficulty in case of any dispute or in defining the rights and liabilities of the parties.

It reveals the need of integrated construction process by utilizing the maximum resources and efficient team work. It depends on the efficiency of the project delivery, planning, design and construction. It is different from the conventional construction process as conventional process depends on the step by step process of designating construction and supplies, while it is concerned with the integration of various processes.

Critical Review

Introduction

Rethinking construction was formulated by a report of Construction Taskforce in 1998. It was led by Sir John Egan; it provides the recommendations made under the report of same title as rethinking construction. The main purpose of this was to evaluate the efficiency of the Constriction Industries of the United States. It was commissioned by the Deputy Prime Minister to assess the performance and progress of the construction business and their quality of construction. Under rethinking construction, the construction industry, its clients and government, work together to improve the construction performance of these industries. The report on this was to analyze all these matters; it provided that most of industry does not achieve their targets and neither do their performance is according to the demands of the quality and time. These industries do not perform up to the expectations of the satisfaction and it does not comply with the basic compliance of the cost reduction, time management, construction quality and profitability. This is based on the simple principles of Client leadership, integrated teams throughout the delivery chain and respect for the people. Main objectives are to achieve improvements in the design, quality, customer satisfaction and sustainability of UK. The main targets were the reduction in the cost, time, defects and accidents and to increase the productivity, turnover and profit (Hinchey,1990).

Discussion

The purpose of a formal contract document

The purpose of formal contract documentation is to safeguard the rights of the contracting parties and also to provide check and balance on the activates of the parties. It helps to keep them bounded in the contractual liabilities. It also prevents the parties from violating the rights of other parties and to assure the risk management. It is also needed in the case of resolving dispute that all the terms are already decided and accepted in the contract. It is required by all the organizations, companies and industries to have a well defined contract (Marson, J. 2010). Rethinking Construction (1998) considers it as the conventional and brought various changes in processing of construction industries of UK.
