Abstract

Atheism is, in a broad sense, the non-belief in deities or other supernatural beings. In a narrower sense, atheism is the position that holds the nonexistence of deities. Some define it as a doctrine or position that rejects theism, which in its most general form is the belief in the existence of at least one deity. In a broad sense could be included within the definition of atheism, both atheists, who do not make explicit the existence of gods, such as those that do not believe in their existence, they have no evidence or conviction to his rebuttal. In a narrow sense excluding the latter, called agnostics, atheists defining. Agnostics and atheists reject recognized as atheists because they believe all inaccessible to human understanding of the divine knowledge and what transcends experience or simply irrelevant. The term atheism includes those people who say the lack of belief in any god or deity. An atheist or deny the existence of a god or gods does not necessarily belong to no religion, there are religions that deny the existence of God or do not mention the existence of any god as the Buddhism and therefore more correctly are atheists or non-theists. The tenets of atheism are contrary to those who hold the religious beliefs and involve a critique of religion. Atheism has probably existed since the origin of theistic, since it is difficult for all members of a society share their religious thought. Throughout history, theistic opinions related to religion have generally had a dominant position in society. Opponents of these positions have not always had the opportunity to express their views in public due to phenomena of persecution such as witch hunts or Inquisition in Christian Europe of the modern age. So in different historical moments, rare to find atheistic views in manuscripts or other historical references. The following paper discusses atheism from the point of view of McCloskey as depicted in his article.

Introduction

“On being an atheist” is an article written by a famous philosopher H.J. McCloskey. He has written numerous pieces of writing describing atheism in the 1960s and the 1970s. In his articles, he takes a critical view of God's existence and condemns that people should not believe in the existence of their creator in the form of God. According to him, atheism is a much easier belief to stay comfortable with in comparison to believing in a God who lets the people suffer in their lives so that they are able to achieve their desirable goals. For him, a man is required to seek comfort from the people or things that grant him comfort or the required things in life. As atheism is a belief adopted by a sensitive person, this creates a sense of self-reliance where people help others and provide them with support in order to fight against the bad fates of life and prove to stay in ...
