Synergy Model in Nursing Practice

According to the considered problem of workload in nursing practice, researchers have discussed many approaches and models for the assessing the extent of the problem as well as its solution. One of these models is Synergy Model, which defines the role of nurse in all sorts of conditions concerning nursing practice. To resolve the additional work load of the nurses, it is necessary to assign the patients in a particular ratio to each nurse. The overall aim is to provide the quality and safe health care services either in the setting of hospital or the nursing homes.

Aim of Synergic Model

This model aims that the teams should adopt the approaches which specified the work of the nurses to the particular group of the patients or population. These approaches can be used to categorize the patients on a different basis as well as to evaluate the safe staffing guidelines. This model offers the system to the nurses in order to coherent the characteristics of the patient in relation to the nurses` workload and their best practice.

Characteristics of the Synergic Model

The Synergic Model is depended on eight factors which are significant for the appropriate and safe practice of nursing. These aspects include

Availability of resource

Participation in the provision of care

involvement in decision making

Vulnerability

Resiliency

Predictability

Complexity

Stability

Advantage of the Synergy Model in Reducing Workload

Synergy model helps in focusing the characteristics related to the population of the patients that impact the workload of the nurses. Moreover, it indicates the relevant capability of the nurses to deliver the effectual and safe care services. Actually, the characteristics demonstrate the components of the crucial decision making ability of the professional nurse. Literature shows that the Synergic Model has been delivering the beneficial nursing practice in various sectors of the health care settings such as critical care, acute care as well as in specialty care areas like geriatrics and pediatrics.

Synergy Model is selected instead of the other available measurement tools of workload. The reason is that it provides the impact of the patients` characteristics on the workload of the care giver rather than the tasks. The traditional systems of measuring the workloads often focus only on the tasks of the caregivers to evaluate their work load (Curely, 2007).

Even though, much advancement have taken in order to refine the current traditional systems of the work load management, but still these systems only portray the small section of the nurses` work and usually overlook their original workload. Furthermore, there is a deficiency of the procedures for guiding the nurses in making decisions. Therefore, nurses used to make decisions on the basis of habit, history and conventional systems of evaluating the workload. This causes the loss of time in making the appropriate decisions and thus the work load on nurses ultimately increases. For this reason, the health care providers require the proper instruments which help the nurses to make the accurate decision without the loss of even a single ...
