How poor are the people in Somalia

Poverty is rampant across the entire country with nearly 43 percent of the people living below the poverty line. The situation is severe in the southern parts where people suffer from poor and unstable economic conditions. Food shortage is prevalent as conflict continues unabated. Floods, droughts, conflicts, internal war and lack of a strong central government have all contributed towards poverty.

Justification

Studies have routinely shown that a major part of the problem pertaining to reduction of poverty and development in this country can be resolved by means of a strong central government that would be dedicated to ending the decade's long conflicts and restoring peace along with several economic and political measures for the people. The United Nations at present is the main funding body that provides assistance to the war torn country through its wing, the UNDP (United Nations Development Program). The problem is complicated to the extent that efforts at the national level may not be sufficient to alleviate the miserable condition. It requires international intervention and the UN is the perfect body that can help Somalia recover from its adverse situation

The purpose of this study is to focus on the role that the UN has played through its various bodies in contributing to the elimination of poverty in Somalia and in helping with developmental projects. The UNDP Somalia has been working with its partners to eliminate poverty and achieve development in Somalia. The findings of this investigation will focus on assessing the contribution that the UN has made in reducing poverty and promoting development in Somalia.

Aims and objectives

This research project will focus on how the UN has been contributing to Somalia in two areas. The first one pertains to the steps taken for reducing poverty, and the second one relates to the efforts made to boost development. A thorough assessment of these efforts will be carried out to ascertain how effective the UN has been in assisting the Somalia nation. It will explore if the people of Somalia have gained benefit through its program. Apart from cortically analyzing the UN performance, this research will also focus on providing an insight over the rationality of its measures. This will provide the space to assess its importance and also make recommendations for further steps that the UN could possibly take to alleviate the deplorable situation in Somalia.

Drawing on the role of the UN on these two fronts, the project will aim to explore the role the UN has played in helping the people of Somalia gain better opportunities to a healthy and free of poverty lifestyle. Specific way in which the UN has achieved these objectives will be elaborated and the need for continuing or expanding the already existing program will be highlighted keeping in mind the requirements of the Somalia people.
