Research Proposal: Innovations in Broadband Access Technologies Using WIMAX

Innovations in Broadband Access Technologies Using WIMAX

Background

Internet technologies have been revolutionizing with the innovations of various wireless technologies. Wireless technologies have provided the users with the freedom of location; they need no more wirings and cables to connect. The user demands for wireless broad band technologies with high speed, reliable connection quality and low cost motivated various new technologies that brought innovations to the broadband infrastructure. Due to the increasing user demands, the mobile market and broad band communication technologies have fair readiness for adopting new technologies that may improve the functionality of the networks and the quality of service; WiMAX is one of such technologies.

WiMax is a wireless broad band technology that has gained wide popularity over past few decades. It has brought certain innovations and benefits to the broadband technologies, such as capability of providing multiple channels, improved coverage areas and reduction in time and cost of deployment. I will discuss the major innovations WiMAX has integrated with the earlier broadband communication technologies.

Literature Review

Considerable amount of research has been done on the topics of WiMAX technology and its innovations. The technical standards for WiMAX, the market options and comparison with the technologies of WiFi and DSL have been presented in (Bai, L., 2007). The thesis analyzed the markets and compared the technologies to find out the economic feasibility and advantages of the WiMAX technology over the others.

WiMAX forum is the international body that works for the support of WiMAX technologies (WiMAX Forum, 2005). The forum consists of more than 40 members, who are responsible for developing and maintaining the international standards, in collaboration with the broadband wireless standards. The forum also works for maintaining the interoperability in between various broad band technology standards. The major standards of WiMAX include HiperMAN/HiperLAN (Europe) and WiBRO (South Korea). WiMAX forum also performs the comparative analysis of WiMAX with the various competing technologies. This analysis helps the forum in developing an understanding about their global position in the telecommunication technology sector. The members critically evaluate and analyze the performance factors. Depending on the analysis findings and critiques, they become able to perform efficiency improvements.

Technical comparisons between the WiMAX and 3G networks have been presented in (Intel, 2004). The technologies of WiMAX, WCDMA and HSDPA are compared for a number of factors, such as attenuation, multipath and frequency selective fading; frequency offset and phase noise, impulse noise rejection, frequency reuse, voice, associated costs and use of advanced radio techniques.

WiMAX relies on the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing technique (Flarion, 2004). However 3G networks have been using much advanced techniques for frequency divisions, but in WiMAX OFDM integrates with high channel bandwidth. Due to this integration of WiMAX, sometimes, it may provide higher data rates.

The network architecture of WiMAX is such that it has brought the flexibility of operations for the users and the service providers. The network operators do not need to redesign the network infrastructure, rather they can deploy ...
