Executive Summary

The research study has reviewed the existing researches on the topic of e-tourism by using different sources as literature on tourism. The study has reported that the information technology (IT) has brought critical changes in the tourism industry and on the other hand, challenges are also facing by the industry.

However, real business world has suggested that tourism related companies should adopt innovative technological expertise and facilitate their tourism network more effectively that can meet with the expectations of customers as well as create competitiveness in the e-tourism marketplace.Section 1: Introduction

The study is about role of information technology in tourism management, which is distributing into five sections, where the first section is offering the brief introduction that demonstrate the areas that have observed and topics covered, the second section is the literature reviews looking towards the number of literature gather by various authors. The third section consists of the methodology that explain the methodology used for carrying out this research while the fourth section is the analysis and discussion which focuses on the areas covered in this research along with the concluding comments that are determining the limitations and recommendations that have came while performing the research.

Background of the Study

The aspects of information technology have changed the nature of tourism industry and have expressed important contributions of the internet and web technology in the promotion and marketing of tourism destinations. This also motivates the tourism industry of the United Kingdom and New Zealand to adopt internet based strategies for promoting regional tourism and the tourism statistics of the UK has also reported the considerable maturity of this web based marketing of tourism (Doolin, et.al, 2002).

In this era of competition, information technology (IT) is enhancing the strategic features of operational and tourism management since; IT is continuously providing the challenges as well as opportunities to the industry. Furthermore, this IT factor requires change in the organizational structures as well as destinations which must compete with the emerging challenges in the industry. In addition to this, competition in tourism management demands a continuous innovations and creativity in order to gain competitive advantage. For that reason, an ongoing process of IT business re-engineering should adopt to achieve a bright vision with proper organisations along with competitive and trained workforce so that more opportunities can be captured with this merging industry through IT interventions (Buhalis, 1998).
