A dam is a man-made structure or natural (resulting from the accumulation of material after landslides), established through the bed of a stream, holding or capable of holding water. Dams have several functions, which can be combined: the regulation of rivers (flood limiter during floods, maintaining a minimum level of water in times of drought), the irrigation, the water supply of cities, power generation, withholding release of a mine or works, tourism and recreation, the fight against fires.
