Research Method Approaches

Introduction

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the deductive and inductive approaches of result. The paper discusses the difference between deductive and inductive research. The paper is also an analysis of the third type of research options available to researchers and the ways through which this research option is different from deductive and inductive research methods.

Deductive Research Methods

Deductive reasoning is one in which a researcher conducts the researches from the general information and makes it a specific one. This approach is also known as the top-down approach because in this approach research mainly initiates at the top. It involves a very broad spectrum of information and narrow down that information to the specific conclusions. For example, a researcher while using the deductive research might start his research with a theory on the topic of his interest. Later on, the researcher narrows down that broad theory into a specific hypothesis which can be tested. However, these hypotheses further become specific in cases when observations are collected in order to test that specific hypothesis (Arvola, 2006). This is a very helpful approach for the researchers enabling them to test the hypothesis with the use of specific data, and lead to the confirmation of the broad data which has been specified to provide the conclusion. One of the examples of deductive approach can be made very obvious from the two statements i.e. every day; I leave my home for school in my van at 9'o clock. Every day, it takes me 50 minutes drive to reach my school on time; therefore, the van comes to pick me up at 9'o clock so that I can reach on time (Hughes, 2000). The presented statement is considered to be a perfectly logical statement, but its reliance on initial premise is to be correct. Thus, it can be said that the deductive approach is mainly used to specify the broad spectrum into the specific spectrum. This is the reason why it is not possible to prove the hypothesis completely, because there is always a possibility that the initial premise can result to be wrong. Deductive approach which is termed as the top-down approach is used for using the general data to the specific one. In empirical research it can be considered that the market research initiated by the study using different theories which have been selected for the chosen topic of interest (Guy, 2005). This approach helps the researcher to analyze the research which has already been conducted and innovate different ideas which can be helpful in extending the already conducted research or adding the theoretical foundations on this research. Based on the topical idea it can be claimed that the main purpose of market researcher is the hypothesis development. The market researchers test the new hypothesis for the purpose of starting a new study. The data which has been collected and analyzed for the purpose of conducting the new study will serve as the test of ...
