Research involves the undertaking of an inquiring on a systemic basis, in order to predict, describe, control and explain the phenomenon being observed. There are two main methods of research; inductive and deductive (Babbie, 1998). In inductive research, the observed phenomenon is analyzed, and the general principles, processes, or structures behind the phenomenon are identified. Deductive method involves the verification of the hypothesis through observations.
There are several functions of research. It is done to reaffirm the findings of other researchers, expand the research work of others, validate theorems, solve new problems, or devise a new theory. The approach towards research can vary, mainly depending upon the field of research, but research in any field results, in the expansion and validation of human knowledge. The research method also depends on the purpose of the research; therefore, identifying the purpose is the first step in the research process (Patton, 1990).
As the information shared in a research paper is acquired from observations or through citation of other research journals, reading them contains many advantages. As a student, I have to read research papers for my assignments. In the beginning, I faced several difficulties, while finding the correct research journals and topics that matched my criteria. After I adopted the habit of reading research papers, now and then, not only my subject knowledge increased considerably, but I felt more comfortable doing assignments based in research papers. I also learned about the latest trends and developments relating to my field. Many individuals will find some of the research papers difficult to understand, but the comprehension increases once you read it several times. Reading research papers proves beneficial, if an individual is interested in doing research in the future.
