The article that I have selected to critique on is 'International survey on attitudes toward ethics in health technology assessment: An exploratory study', written by Luis E. Arellano, Jeffrey M. Willett, and Pascal Borry. This article was published in the International Journal of Technology assessment in Health Care (27:1, 50-54) in 2011. This essay entails the critique of this article while highlighting different aspects of the study such as the problem identification, literature reviewed, sample used, correlation between objectives and results, and other elements.

As this article is an exploratory study, it involves an objective statement “to survey international health technology assessment (HTA) professionals to determine attitudes toward ethics in HTA” (Arellano, Willet, & Borry, 2011). This objective statement is not too large and complex; rather it is clear and concise. The article clearly reflects on its objective statement by providing the relevant information regarding Health Technology Assessment (HTA) focus and its incorporation of ethical considerations. The authors have clearly provided the base on which their objective statement is developed, such as the focus of HTA since its development is more inclined towards clinical as well as economic outcomes as compared to ethical analysis, due to which the authors aimed at conducting an exploratory study to determine the attitudes towards ethics in HTA.
The article clearly provides the base for the significance of this study, as the authors illustrates different studies that have already been conducted to assess ethical issues in HTA and published. Further, the authors have also highlighted that methods for evaluating ethical implications of health technology are comparatively undeveloped and a valid query remains whether process of handling such ethical problems can be adopted, due to which this study was designed for examining present international attitudes towards ethics in HTA.
