Types of hypothesis

Null Hypothesis

For all types of research that have two or more groups, is establish a null hypothesis. The null hypothesis is that it tells us that there are no significant differences between groups. For example, suppose a researcher believes that if a group of young people undergoes an intensive training swim, they will be better swimmers than those who received no training. To prove his hypothesis takes A random sample of young people, and randomly distributed in two groups: experimental one call, which will be trained, and a non-receive any training, which we call control. The null hypothesis indicate that there is no difference in performance between the group swimming young people received training and did not know him. (Van & De Jong, 1991, p.395).

A null hypothesis is important for several reasons:

It is a hypothesis that is accepted or rejected depending on the result of the research. The fact of having a null hypothesis helps to determine whether a difference between groups, whether this difference is significant, and if not due to random. Not all research needs null hypotheses. Recall that the null hypothesis is that by which indicate that the information sought is contrary to the hypothesis. In making this assumption, to deny the independent variable. That is, states that are determined as the cause of the problem source fluctuates, therefore, should be rejected as such (Van & De Jong, 1991, p.395).

Hypothesis conceptual

It is the hypothesis formulated as a result of the theoretical explanations applicable to our problem. It helps us to explain from the point of view theory the phenomenon we are investigating. It is the guiding assumptions of research, trying to approach the problem as basis for the search data. You cannot bite off more than proposed in the research objectives or disagree with them. We can state it as a causal or determinant from the approach the problem, from which emerge the variables.

Working Hypothesis

It is that which serves the investigator as the basis of his research, that is, this attempt to explain the phenomenon under investigation. This is the hypothesis that the researcher will try to take as a result of their research, rejecting the null hypothesis. It is said that the working hypothesis is operational to present quantitatively (In measurable terms) or general conceptual hypothesis.

Alternative hypothesis

In responding to a problem, it is appropriate to propose other hypotheses in different independent variables appear among the first to formulate. Therefore, to avoid wasting time in useless searches, is different hypotheses need to find alternatives in response to the same problem and choose among them what and in what order we will treat your checking. The assumption, of course, will differ according to the type of research being performed. Exploratory studies, sometimes, the objective of the investigation may be simply to get the minimum knowledge to formulate a hypothesis. It is also acceptable in this case, resulting imprecise, as when we say that "there is some kind of social problem in ...
