Religious Issues

Debate around the issue

Over many years due to nation's great diversity and constitutional foundations, there is the interrelation between religion and schools (high schools and public schools) and, it is the hottest issue. There is the restriction from the establishment of religion which is presented in the first amendment of U.S constitution which shows that Congress is not allowed to make any law in the establishment of religion. This law is used as the concept of separation of church and the state. Schools are facing different ethical issues in this regard. In the previous century, the Supreme Court of United States did not allow any student to pray and wear religious dress because, they did not want any student to express their religious believes (Education Commission of the States, 2000). It is because, they want to prove their society as the secular society and, religion has nothing to do with that kind of societies. The recent debate in the American Society is about that the role of the faith and religion should play important part in the society. In the history of American education, it was clearly noticed that religion was the major source of education for the students and, religion was taught to higher classes. Religion was the compulsory subjects for students in the history but, today history has changed and, law do not want to appreciate the teachings of religion.

Many scholars are teaching comparative religion and, confusing students in their direction of religion. Students are not allowed to express their beliefs and, in some schools they are not allowed to debate on their religious thoughts (Education Commission of the States, 2000). If student find anything to discuss regarding the religion then, he has to keep his mouth shut for a month and, do not allow to take part in other debates. Students also do not focus to debate about religious thought because they have other topics to debate. Schools think that there are other major parts of society which are important to discuss as compared to religious talks. In several parts of States, students have both opinions, some want to share their religious thoughts and others do not. Ethical issues also arises due to the differences between the religious schools and the faith schools. Religion schools are those who teach religion and faith schools are those which teach national curriculum. Parents also pay religious taxes in order to make their children knowledgeable about religion but, schools are not playing active part and, somehow students are also not interested.

The other issue is that schools and some professors think that by not teaching religion, students are allowed to express their freedom of thoughts because they are not bound when they are free not to follow religion (Guttmann, 2004). It is all about teaching young people about ...
