Proposal Statement

The countries that I have explored are India and China. The media sources searched for this purpose was Channel News Asia and China daily. The news was covered in 2012 highlighting the poverty prevalence and reduction strategies.

The topic selected was poverty in both the countries and the efforts that have been undertaken to fight poverty on the national level. I chose this topic because both the countries are still fighting to ensure equality among the society by eradicating the ill of poverty. This topic was significant because much has been said and written about poverty prevalence in both the countries and much media and news coverage has been undertaken. I will be further evaluating the causes of poverty in India and China and the effectiveness of the poverty reduction measures.

Fighting poverty in India, Channel News Asia

This news was covered in the edition of April, 2012. The focus was on the fact that India has had some success in reducing poverty but 350 million people yet live below the poverty line. According to government forecasts India's economic growth expected to be 10 percent annually in coming years. This is because in the last 3 years the economy has grown by 8 percent despite the shortage of energy and rising oil prices (Prakash, 2012). But what the Government is seeking to achieve economic growth that substantially reduces poverty, unemployment and inequality in the country. However, it appears that this growth has not reduced poverty at the same level of economic achievements. In India, according to data provided by the government, 27.5 percent of the population, more than 236 million people live on less than 40 cents a day. One of the most affected by economic problems is the agricultural sector that does not make the profits needed to survive. If prices increase the most affected would be the poorer sections of society in India. The government thus seeks to improve the real income and quality of life of farmers. An interesting project to give the poorest work is related to the care of ecology (Prakash, 2012). The situation is always precarious for many Indians and being the second most populous of the Earth causes the concentration of so many people in one place, produce disputes over food, labor and others. The less touristy areas of India are having a state of extreme poverty, with houses that have many cracks, numerous bugs in it and often have no drinking water, clear water. It is a sad outlook for most Indians, who are now suffering the consequences of poverty in which they live.
