REFLECTIVE STUDY

The current study has been undertaken to provide a clearer and elaborated view upon the performance of mergers and acquisitions happening in the hospitality industry. The research study, precisely and specifically, investigates the reaction of the stock market on mergers and acquisitions of hotels and restaurants. This main problem statement of the research has been explored through considering the payment methods and utilizing accounting-based and finance-based methods as well as considering the financial performance of the hotels. Besides this, the relationships of mergers and performance have been explored along with their impact on short and long term performance of the firms in the hotel and restaurants industry. Thus, the effects of offers, modes of payments and the financial performance of the acquiring and the acquired companies are assessed in order to examine their impacts on the acquired firms.

In order to present a reflection on the research study, this paper shall provide a gist of the entire research process which has been utilized during the investigation. Moreover, it will also look into the learning objectives which have been accomplished, also those which could be gained if a more extensive study had been performed. Besides this, the limitations and suggestions of the present study will be highlighted along with the development of new research skills and their utilization (Wayne, 2009, Online).

The Research Process

Just like every other investigative study, this dissertation has also been prepared through an extensive research process followed by a comprehensive literature search and a deep analytical approach. Above all, the study discusses an issue which has become the matter of much significance in the hospitality industry of current business environment.

The topic of value creation through mergers and acquisitions in the hospitality industry was chosen to be conducted for the purpose of research. The reason for this selection is that this subject has gained a much practical and debatable status these days. There has been an aroused interest amongst scholars, investors and other business stakeholder due to the increasing acquisitions and mergers in the current corporate environment. The restaurant industry has adopted much more innovative styles of operations through the strategy of merging into, and acquiring the other restaurants and hotels in the industry. Thus, the choice of topic has been made by keeping in view the current trends and situations of the business sector.

An extensive data collection approach has been adopted in the course of researching and hunting for the relevant facts and figures. The research process was undertaken through gathering information from Standard & Poor's Compustat database. A detailed set of information was extracted from other websites, journals and publications too with regards to the completion of mergers and acquisitions from the period of 1985 to 2009. Then, the financial and investment aspects of the industry were observed, studied and detailed along with the financial and numerical illustrations.
