Reflection on Practice

Introduction

Nursing is a practice discipline. It is important that the nurse must be trained well enough and they are capable of applying the learned theories into their practice. This is the reason why the nurses give significant importance to 'Reflection'. Reflection has become an important part of nursing education. Reflection facilitates nurses in learning theoretical section and helps them apply the learned theories in their practice. The health personnel use reflection to incorporate learning into clinical practices.

The nursing apprentices experience contradictions between the learned theoretical content and approaches needed in practice. This challenges the learning process of the nurses and causes difficulties for nurses in practice. This is where the role of reflection begins. It helps the nurses to easily use their learned knowledge and integrate it into their professional practising.

Reflection can be defined as the premeditated intellectual processing, which can be used with the uncertain and difficult situations to fulfil a certain rationale. This is the reason why it holds a significance importance in the health professionals' execution of learning into practice.

This has made the role of reflection more significant in the development of nursing professionally.

There are several models of reflection that helps the nurses guide how to produce the reflection in words. These reflections are used by the nurses in written form where they pen down the portfolio of their practice. The most common model that is used for reflection amongst others is Gibbs reflection model. The others are John reflection model, Kolb's learning cycle and Atkins and Murphy's model of reflection and many more.
