Reflection Essay

Introduction

Why reflection is important?

Before coming to this course knowledge I was thinking health promotion was only about information given and advising now I realize that there is more. According to WHO 1986 in Otawa Charter health promotion is concerned with empowering people to take control over their health and as follows includes a range of strategies to strengthen communities , developing supportive environment and inform and educate about health issues.

Naidoo and Wills (2010) support that a reflective practitioner is one who is capable of improving practice wisdom and questioning the approach taken. Reflection is an essential component of the learning process. It not only permits us to learn more about ourselves and the way we learn, but also helps us in improving our academic skills. The importance of reflection can be viewed for e.g. looking back to our learning process will help us recognize which activities worked well for us and which ones did not.

I have observed that the most important speculative root of reflection is originated from John Dewey's statement in which he states “We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience.” The cycle of learning developed by John Dewey is based on the conviction that deep learning comes from a chain of experience, abstraction, reflection and active testing.

In this reflective essay, I will be depicting health promotion learning that I took throughout my practice, a recognized structure for reflection to exhibit my capacity to reflect distinctive health promoting learning outcomes. Reflection is referred to as a form of psychological processing like a form of thinking that we utilize to accomplish an objective or to attain some projected result. It is applied to comparatively unstructured or complicated ideas for which there is not an evident result and is mostly based on the additional processing of understanding and knowledge and probably emotions that we already own.

Discussion

Definition of health promotion learning

WHO (2010) deifined Health promotion as the source of facilitating an individual to increase control over their health as well as improving the health of the society and the public. In order to achieve a complete state of mental, physical and social well being, a group or individual must be able to identify and to recognize goals to satisfy needs and to change or deal with the environment.

Health can be defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO, 1946) cited in Naidoo and Wills (2000).

I have experienced health as a source of daily life and not only the objective of living. Health is a positive perception highlighting personal and social resources, as well as physical abilities. Consequently, health promotion is not just the responsibility of the division of health but goes ahead of healthy life-styles to wellness.
