Meaning of Recruitment

Edwin Filippo defines recruitment as the process of searching for potential candidates for vacancies and providing them with a stimulus to seek employment in the organization. Recruitment also serves as a bridge between the potential candidates and organizations. However, there is no single definition for recruitment with experts defining the process in a variety of ways. Through this process organizations look to create a pool of potential candidates for future needs in terms of human resource even when there are no vacancies. Generally, the process begins when a manager files a requisition for an empty designation (Currie & Horsfield, 2009).

Importance and Purpose of Recruitment

To attract and motivate a significant number of potential candidates to apply for employment at the organization

Develop a pool of potential candidates to allow selection of the best available resources for the organization

Assess the current and expected requirements of the firm keeping in mind the organization's personnel planning activities and job analysis

The process links the candidates with the employer

Allows development of a pool of candidates at a significantly low cost

Assists in increasing the rate of success of the selection process by filtering out the under-qualified from the qualified candidates

It also helps the organization is reducing the probability of selected employees leaving the organization after serving for a short period of time.

Facilitates the organization in meeting social and legal obligations of developing and composition of the workforce

The task of attracting applicants was by far the most reliant on e-recruitment sources, tools and techniques in all three companies. For sourcing candidates, the companies used advertising on corporate websites, Internet job portals, and a few online résumé databases. Sometimes, the companies also placed job ads on specialised websites, such as various financial institutions and the state financial regulator in the case of Scandifin. Energowing frequently used professional networks like Linkedln as an additional recruitment source.

Database Search

Every organization, over the years, manages a database of potential candidates that meet the criteria for employment. The first step is to search the organization's own database when looking to recruit new employees.

Advertise the Vacancy

By advertizing the opening, the organization would be assisted in the identification of any new candidates that are present in the labor market but are not registered on the organization's database. The most common method of advertizing today is on the internet. Organizations do not charge the candidates for the advertize they set for the vacancy.

Referrals and Networking

The next step for recruitment is to hire through referrals of existing employees or using the organization's networking abilities. This is also one of the major sources of candidates and is done with the help of various professional bodies or head-hunting agencies. These agencies or consultancies search their databases that match the organization's criteria for the designation (Cook, 1992).

Processing Applicants
