ABSTRACT

Effective and sustainable peace-building and conflict prevention involve personal and interpersonal changes, addressing conditions at the root of conflict as well as ongoing conflict dynamics. It is a fact that long-term peace will not occur and violence will not be prevented without overcoming mutual hostility and re-establishing connections. The need for reconciliation is rooted in the complexity and massive scale of the conflict and the current presence of members of conflicting groups within the same communities, which serves to increase societal and workplace tension. Reconciliation involves engagement in multiple of tasks on the part of conflicting individuals or groups. A number of tasks have commonly been identified in existing literature: exchanging stories and developing a shared narrative; acknowledging and coming to terms with the past; truth-telling and accepting responsibility; recognition of and empathy for one another's suffering and losses; appreciation of one another's identity and humanity; positive changes in attitudes and interaction; development of non-violent conflict resolution mechanisms; and the imagining and substantiation of a collective, shared vision of the future.
