Development of Battery

A battery is an electrochemical device which stores energy in chemical form. When connected to an electrical circuit, transforms chemical energy into electrical energy. All batteries are similar in construction and consist of a number of electrochemical cells. Each of these cells is composed of a positive and a negative electrode and a separator. When the battery is discharging, an electrochemical change is taking place between the different materials in the two electrodes. The electrons are transported between the positive and negative electrode via an external circuit (light bulbs, starters etc.).

To be able to compare different types of batteries and understand the differences between normal and OPTIMA batteries, it is necessary to have an idea of ??the basic operation of a battery. Superficially battery technology may seem simple. But now the electrochemical processes that are used in a battery are quite complex. There are several factors that determine the functioning of a battery.

Despite the great efforts made in research of different types of materials, lead-acid batteries are preferred and insurmountable by the range of applications they have. Lead is plentiful and not too expensive and for this reason is suitable for producing good quality batteries in large quantities. There are different types of material used to store energy. Batteries often take the name of the type of material used for construction (Nickel-Iron, Lithium-Iron). Other batteries are named according to the material found in the electrodes and the type of electrolyte used (Laposky 2006, pp. 48). Most are usually lead-acid batteries. The active material used determines the voltage of the cells and the number of cells determines the total voltage of the battery. The lead-acid batteries have a nominal voltage of about two volts. Most car batteries are made up of six cells and therefore, have a voltage of twelve volts. The voltage that occurs in the flash of the typical battery is 1.5 volts.

Rechargeable Battery Development

Rechargeable batteries are apparently dispensable as ordinary batteries, but once they stop working, or they run out of charge, can be recharged to use again, unlike common batteries used only once. The batteries are present everywhere, its use is quite massive. We can find inside toys, remote controls, electronics and even cars, due to the wide use. The reason is that the rechargeable batteries are increasingly opening up a wider market place, since many people prefer to buy given convenience and great economy in the long term (Blanchfield 2006, pp. 48).

Within the world of rechargeable batteries, the most common are lead and nickel-cadmium batteries. The former are used primarily in automobiles to meet the start function, as well as lighting and ignition.
