ABSTRACT

This research is an attempt to study the environment sustainability of the commercial buildings in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. With the rapidly growing population and a higher level of growth in the economy, the KSA has experienced a dynamic expansion in its infrastructure, especially in the context of buildings. Therefore, whenever it is compared to the other nations, the issue related to energy efficiency is not considered serious with respect to the designs of the Saudi Buildings. Additionally, KSA is considered to be one of the driest areas around the globe and it has been facing very serious challenges in relation to the rapidly growing demand of water. This research has adopted a case study analysis method for assessing the environmental sustainability of the Accro and Movenpick hotels that are situated in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The results of the analysis have shown that the Saudi hotels that not just shows that they severely lacks means for ensuring the water and energy efficiency, but it also demonstrates a few of the designs and the changes that must be made to the operations that might have a significant impact on the sustainability performance of the hotel. The measures for conserving the energy have been discussed in this research study, for example improving the thermal insulation of the external roofs and walls, better glazing efficiency, fitting the devices of external shades and fitting fluorescent lighting that is energy efficient. The measures of water consumption includes the usage of low flowing taps in the bathrooms and kitchens, low flowing showerheads, efficient washing machines and installing a system of grey water.
