Introduction

When the Mexican War ended in 1848, the land that was to become Colorado was virtually uninhabited of white settlers. English-speaking whites invaded the Colorado frontier in larger numbers a few years later. In July 1858, a remnant of a band of Argonauts, prospecting for gold in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near present-day Denver, found “pay dirt” in their mining pans, precipitating the Pikes Peak gold rush. The gold mines attracted Confederate attention to the area until March 1862, when a Union force, including a regiment of Coloradans, routed a Confederate column in the Rio Grande Valley in New Mexico. The end of the Civil War also brought answers to another territorial need: improved transportation.

John Evans

John Evans was a famous politician and the second governor of the state of Colorado. He was born in Ohio and had graduated in Medicine. He did lot of social work also and because of his large amount of wealth, soon he gathers an immense political power. Because of his political power, he soon becomes a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln. Therefore when Abraham Lincoln became the president, he appointed John Evans the governor of the state of Colorado.



Significance to the American History

His contribution and significance to the American history is important and exemplary. Probably the biggest role that he played in the American history was because of his work for the field of education. He founded the Colorado's first college which latter become the University of Denver. He was also acknowledged for his work when the rebellions attached the territory and killed hundreds of people.

Denver and Rio Grande Railway

The Denver and Rio Grande is a defunct US railroad company. The railroad was started as a narrow gauge line and served as a link between Denver and Salt Lake City. The Denver and Rio Grande comes up with a motto of “Through the Rockies, which assets the fact that they were specialized and more focused on mountain railroading.
