Rage against the machine was an American rock band, established in 1991. The group consists of guitarist Tom Morello, Zack de la Rocha the vocalist, Brad Wilk the drummer and Tim Commerford bassist and backing vocalist. The group belonged to Los Angeles, California. As the name suggested, the genre of the band was inspired by early instrumentation of heavy mental. The band became popular by the release of its first album that made way for lollapalooza, in 1993. During the mid, of 1990s mu metal genre emerged, which influenced the band's music. The battle of Los Angeles, the third album of “Rage against the machine”, was released in 1999. During these years, the band became one of the most successful bands in the country. In 2000, the band broke up, and Zack Morello started his solo career. The rest of the members joined Chris Cornell for Audioslave. However, the band reunites for a live performance in 2007, and since then, the band performed several live concerts and music festivals. Their music was initially criticized the basis of its violently arguable music, racism, political obsession and cultural expansionism (Ankeny, J. pp. 10-15).
Composition of the Band
The composition of Rage against the machine was not carried out by any particular group member, in fact, each member compose his own part like, Tom Morello composes guitar part of the song, brand Wilk composes his drumming, Tim Cummerford writes the bass and Zack de la Rocha writes the lyrics of the songs. This collective effort was the actual reason of their music perfection and unmatched composition. We will individually discuss these members, their composition, musical education and influences that design their own unique way of composition (Devenish, C. pp. 50-55).
Zack de la Rocha
Rocha started his musical career from Juvenile Expression, with Tim Commerford. This band came into being while he was still at junior school. His inspiration and interests with bands like Bad Religion, The Sex Pistol, Bad Brains and The Teen Idles, causes him to join Hardstance right after he start his high school. Rocha along with Mark Hayworth formed a band called Inside Out released their single record in 1990, before they broke up. According to Rocha, Inside Out was his inspiration that causes him to believe that he was not a part of society and the system; he used his music to express his indignation. Rocha started freestyle singing in local clubs after Inside Out broke up; there, he met Brad Wilk and Tom Morella and him old school acquaintance and band mate Commerford joined them to form “Rage Against the Machine“.
Rocha left the band in 2000 due to some differences between him and the rest of the band over the release of Renegades. He started his solo career afterwards, for which he was working even before the dissolution of the band.
