Black psychology is an African perspective at looking some of the societal, economical and psychological problems. There are two ways at the black psychology is looked at, there is one group that thinks that this approach is appropriate in analyzing all the prospective issues that are confronted by the people at large. The notion of Black psychology gained prominence as some of the Black scholars attempt at showing that Blacks were not inferior to their white counterparts in any means or ways (Duncan, 2003).
African American has borrowed most of their concepts and their originations from West African Tribes. If one looks at American psychology, it can be seen that the roots of their culture still initiate from their heritage in Africa. Sometimes Black Psychology is not interpreted correctly as it is perceived that it was just a voice on an underprivileged group of society. Instead if one understands the roots and historical context of their culture. It can be clearly seen that this psychology does not came into being because of the way some Afro Americans where susceptible about their identity in United States of America (Thomas, 2004).
If we look at the history about how blacks came into USA. They came here as an enslaved and captured nation. They were made to work hard in plantations. The way they were being oppressed in USA left many scar on the way they perceive themselves. They were completely detached and they lost their cultural sensibilities. It has been well-documented they way Blacks were treated before the Civil War (Thomas, 2004). It was only after civil war that they started to make their presence felt and made giant strides in the society. But even after Civil War, they had to fight for their right and there was always a constant tussle between the already free citizens of USA. In the beginning of 18th and 19th century, they were always struggling to make their presence felt in the society at large.
They had to overcome this notion of white supremacy as well as try to carve they were trying to carve their own niche. In fact, if we look at history, Blacks has been meted out more or less same treatment in different parts of the world (Duncan, 2003). It is also a proven fact that that whenever there is a minority in any society, it has become very difficult for society to adopt them. Looking at the way blacks have been treated in some of the places they have been in majority, it becomes very clear that there is a nation that has by large struggled to make their presence felt. People have always considered minorities in a very distasteful manner. So called intellectuals try to demean the minority in some manner (Duncan, 2003).
