1. What is a teleological explanation?

Teleological explanations answer “What for?” questions by appealing to forward-looking reasons.Children learn that certain things - a snapped twig, a pattern of pebbles washed up by the tide - are not thought to be explainable in this way. But there is a vast range of phenomena which adults do try to explain teleologically. Children accept these explanations and learn rules for constructing them. Folk acceptability is no guarantee of scientific acceptability, however. Many thinkers have held that the study of purposes is no business of science.Let us distinguish between supernatural purposes and natural purposes. Even if mainstream science eschews the former, it smiles on the latter.

2. What features of mind-body dualism does Jonas most object to?

Dualists in the philosophy of mind emphasize the radical difference between mind and matter. They all deny that the mind is the same as the brain, and some deny that the mind is wholly a product of the brain.

Jonas most object to the persuasion that nature is purposeless rests on the premise that, prior to man's evolutionary appearance, nature is totally lacking in anything like mentality.

It is important that we grasp clearly how the picture of an "unconscious" universe" evolved out of the myths and philosophies that wrested mentality from its matrix in nature. The key to our story lies in the inveterate dualism of Western thought and in the inversions and monistic resolutions that this dualism has undergone.

3. What makes an organism the fundamental unit of life?

The importance of that organism makes it the fundamental unit of life, thiese organisim plays a vital role in out life a good example can be cells. ll living beings, plants and animals, start their life with a single cell. Some organisms exist as a single cell and carry out the various metabolic life processes such as assimilation, respiration, reproduction, excretion, etc., that are essential for their survival.

4. What about the “new science” became problematic for understanding life?

There are answers to life's questions. The answers just don't exist in our current understandings. A new metaphysical discovery is needed such that we may understand the essential questions of life: Who am I? and Why am I here? As new sciences discover new interesting fact about life it as well discover more question which there are no answer for them, this aspect of new science has created problem for understanding of life.

What does the “nobility of sight” mean?

It actually describe the importance of sight. Since the days of Greek philosoghy sight has been recognized as the most excellent of the senses. The noblest activity of the mind, theoria, is described in metaphors mostly taken from the visual field.
