Research Title

A study on the relationship between amount of homework and the achievement on primary school students of a Johor Bahru primary school.

Introduction

The recital and performance of students has always been a matter of great concern for the education experts as well as sociologists, because of the fact that students of today are the rulers of tomorrow.

General phenomenon of homework

The phenomenon of homework given to students deals with the idea of keeping them in touch with the studies during off time and prevents them from forgetting all that they have learnt. It also aims at increasing the knowledge and information level for the students. All the developed and sophisticated nations pay great attention to the education of their students because they know that educating a child is an investment in future, which is sure to pay off with the passage of time. It is due to the same reason that education is not only highly regarded in developed countries but is also carefully studied and researched in order to come up with the methods of making the education system better and more developed. The progress and development in the education system allows students to polish and furnish their skills in a better manner and thus perform better in future. Better schools with developed education system ensure more qualified individuals in the future society, with more doctors, engineers, qualified journalists and other professionals.

Problems occurring due to homework

While considering the factors acting behind the performance of students, various theories and ideas should b carefully considered, including the balance between work and recreation and the amount of burden that might be placed on the children safely (Niles, 2012). A number of theories of psychology, sociology and education have to be considered in order to access the balance of work and recreation for students, and the study has been planned keeping in view those theories as well as previous researches.

Homework and achievement

It should be noted that while a number of parents and teachers believe in planning a tight and busy schedule for the children, so that they remain active and fit, there is yet another school thought which believes in keeping a balance between the two. Belonging to the late school of thought, the researcher seeks to find balance between the amount of homework given to students and the level of their achievement.

Purpose/ objective of the research

Thus, the study seeks to find the balance between amount of work burden placed on students and the consequent changes in their performance level.

The basic purpose of Homework is to keep students in touch with studies even after they go home and to assist them in paying extra attention to the studies, which they might fail to do at school.
