Wetlands are land areas whereby there is saturated water which is present seasonally or permanently in a way that it develops the characteristics of an ecosystem. There are many factors but the distinguishing factor is the vegetation which is growing on the wetlands that are said to be present in different soil conditions. It is an area which mainly consists of hydric soil which tends to support the aquatic plants. The water that is present in wetlands is brackish, saltwater or freshwater and the main wetland tends to have fens, swamps, bogs as well as the marshes. When it comes to the sub-types it mainly includes varzea, mangrove, pocosin as well as carr (Matiza et al, 1992).

Wetlands tend to play various roles when it comes to the environment which mainly entails purification of water, control of floods as well as stability of the shoreline. It is wetlands that are said to be diverse biologically when it comes to ecosystems. It is such ecosystems that are a part playing the role of ecosystems that are said to serve as home to not only animals but also plants as well (Dugan & Dugan, 1990). Wetlands exist everywhere except Antarctica. Wetlands can also be constructed in an artificial manner and can be termed as a management tool. It is this aspect which plays an important role when it comes to the development of urban design that is water-sensitive. It is Wetlands that tend to play a crucial role when it comes to the river flow regulation and it also aids in filtering out the pollutants as well as the fertilizers (Gleason et al, 2008).
