Sickle Cell Anemia - Public Health & Health Promotion
Sickle Cell Anemia - Public Health & Health Promotion
Introduction
Sickle Cell Anemia is the Hemoglobin disorder which is inherited in the person through the family history of same diseases. It is a common public health issue which is spreading in the UK. Research found that black and minority ethnic groups are highly affected from the Sickle Cell Anemia, while generally 6% of the total population in the England is affected from this disease with 11% of birth in groups are highly anticipated to be at the risk of hemoglobin disorder and Sickle Cell Anemia (McFadden, 1995). Districts of the UK account the figures that there are 5% of births who are at major risk of Sickle Cell Anemia need the dedicated health promotion through care, education and counseling services (Bunn, 1997). The areas where the investigation is not done yet should not be assumed to be unaffected from the disease as there are chances that disease can occur at any time even at those areas with green signal. Therefore, it is imperative to take the necessary measures that should ensure the screening, education and counseling of the Sickle Cell Anemia. This objective of this research is to examine the health promotion activities of the Sickle Cell Anemia in UK and global context.
Health promotion is essential for the effective screening of the disease in order to improve the quality of the life of people combating against the disease and those who are at high risk of contracting with the disease. The health promotion involves the early help from professional doctors, physicians, nurses, medical health centers and other non-professionals who has important influence on the society for disease management. The health promotion will enable fighting against the disease by helping the families affected, providing the cost of treatment to the minority groups and other disease management that can contribute towards reducing the disease. This also involves the early screening, counseling, education and professional development of those who are responsible for providing the public health care (Davis et al, 1993). The public health has commonly defined in the four functions, statutory role -that provides the services from prevention of the illness, population based role -that provide the services from prevention of illness to the communities, surveillance role -which provides services by continually monitoring the diseases from falling and the social justice role -which provides services of health amenities to the all (Taylor, 2008). Every individual in the society has the influence for the public health. The local authorities, educationists, social care systems, families, law and order machinery, business both private and public and voluntary sectors has an important role to play in the contribution to the public health. It is the responsibility of the governments to enforce the law and order machinery, develop policies and provide funds to ensure that public health activities are smoothly running and are accessible to everyone in the society (McFadden, 1995).
