Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Discussion of Findings and Results

The American Psychiatric Association defines the state of stress trauma as "a morbid condition occurred at the waning of an exceptionally violent event, capable of causing distress to anyone. Soldiers that have participated in wars like Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq become the PTSD sufferers, the traumatic event or events in some way, they lean to avoid places, people, or other things that hark back them of the event (avoidance), and are delicately responsive to regular life practices (hyperarousal).

Descriptive (frequency tables)

To find out the results of the data set which has been collected through the survey questionnaire, we have applied different statistical techniques like descriptive statistics (frequency tables and Chi-Test). Frequency tables represent the simplest method of analyzing categorical (nominal) variables. Often they are used as one of the procedures of exploratory analysis to see how different groups of data are distributed in the sample.

The tables below show the frequency distribution for different variables which we have used in our survey, it can be seen from the table below that most of the participants who are the respondents of our survey were single which comprises of 65% of the total data set. While the remaining 7 were married out of whom 4 were divorced.

The gender variable is normally distributed as half of the survey respondents were male and half were female. Table below shows that 40% i.e. 8 respondents have taken education only upto High School/GED level while only 35% i.e. 7 of the total respondents have completed their bachelors.

Results from the table suggest that 35% and 20% of the respondents often feel tense sometime times and most often which cumulates 55% of the total data set, which means that traumatic events like war have a significant impact on their mind sets. The table shows the frequency, cumulative (accumulated) the frequency, percentage, and cumulative percentage of respondents who expressed their feeling in the following scale: (1) Seldomly True, (2) Sometimes True, (3) Most Often True.

Similarly all the tables in appendix show that respondents who have interviewed and were a part of any traumatic event are facing disorders in their normal life. Statistics regarding this illness indicate that approximately 40%-45% of respondents in the United States will likely develop PTSD in their lifetime, with the lifetime occurrence (prevalence) in combat veterans and Afghan wars from 20% to as high as 40%.

They found themselves in disorders like depression, they feel disorganized, they agree that they have dark nigh mares and even flash backs of the violent memories. The respondents believe that they feel helpless in making their life settle in normal condition ...
