Epidemiological studies are related to psychological trauma are mostly Anglo-Saxon and refer to the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as presented in the last three versions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (APA, 1986, 1989, 1996). Historically, these studies have focused on the prevalence of the disorder among the victims of specific traumatic experiences. They have, and still allow to estimate the frequency of trauma, diseases associated with it and the individual or situational variables that moderate or exacerbate the effects to guide therapeutic measures.
