Computerised Cognitive Behaviour

Computerised Cognitive Behaviour

Summary of the Research Article

The research performed by Elsegood & Powell (2008), was to discover whether older people with anxiety and gloominess were potentially prepared to connect with computerised behaviour therapy (cCBT). The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has suggested computerised cognitive behaviour therapy for the administration of placid to reasonable anxiety and depression. (NICE, 2006).

The researchers of the study got ethics endorsement from the Directorate's Service Governance Forum and the Trust's Research and Development Manager. The practitioners of the medical health recognized 60 service users as appropriate members. The criteria for inclusion was from serene to reasonable hopelessness and nervousness as per medical judgement. The criterion for elimination were stern anxiety or depression based on medical judgement and analysis of dementia (Elsegood & Powell 2008, pp. 189-190).

All of the 60 research participants were provided with information sheet emphasizing the deliberation of the study, and were assured that their judgment regarding the participation would not have an adverse impact on their care. The research participants were also provided with a prospect to request queries regarding the learning. From the 60 participants, 41 of them were outpatients while 16 were present at a day hospice, and 3 were inpatients on ward for serviceable disorders.

The questionnaire that was used by the researchers for the research comprised of nine multiple choice queries. Six of those questions needed a yes/no/not sure reply and three needed a reply on a three point scale. At last, members of the research were requested to make additional comments. The survey was intended to determine whether research members would be eager to use computerised treatment, and if so whether they would be prepared to understand the essential computer expertise (Elsegood & Powell 2008, pp. 190-191).

As the result of the research, it was found that there were 38 service users who finished the survey, out of which 27 were female and 11 were male. The results of the research study are given as under:

Curiosity in Computerised Therapy

The users of the service were enquired if they would be involved in utilization of computer based therapy for assistance with anxiety or despair, if it were made accessible inside the service. Their answers were such that, 17 of the participants revealed that they are interested, 13 of them gave the response that they are not interested and 8 of them were not sure whether they are interested or not (Elsegood & Powell 2008, pp. 191-192).

Readiness to Learn Computer Expertise

The users of the service were requested whether they would be enthusiastic to discover the required computer expertise necessary for the computer based treatment. The data gathered from the responses were insufficient to point out the trends among expressed interests in utilization of computer based therapy and other variables. The responses were like: 17 users said that they are eager to learn the computer expertise, 12 said that they are not prepared to learn the computer skills while 9 of the users reported that they are not sure ...
