Person Centred Therapy

Person Centred Therapy

Introduction

Person-centred therapy is a branch of psychological aid that treats a patient orally, wherein he patient is provided the opportunity to develop through proper encouragement their self of self-worth in order to establish how their attitudes, feelings as well as typical behaviour is affecting their life in a negative manner. Carl Rogers, the renowned American psychologist, introduced the humanistic approach towards psychology, and person-centred therapy is one of his most famous works. It is a distinctive approach to understanding how the human personality and relationships work together to form an individuals perception of themselves. Person centred therapy is applied in a wide array of domains such as counselling, education, organizations, work settings or psychotherapy. Rogers introduced this type of therapy in the 1940's and 1950's, and is generally used by psychotherapists around the world due to its humanistic approach towards treating the patient. Rogers attempted to assert that each individual's personal familiarity is is essentially the foundation and standard for their private living and remedial effects, and identified by himself 6 conditions that he believed could bring forth fundamental character changes in clients: affiliations, susceptibility to uneasiness and paranoia, authenticity of their own character, client's own perception of the therapist's character's authenticity, the therapist themselves holding unreserved optimistic regard for the client, and precise compassion for the clients situation. Person centred therapy differs from others as there is a definite disregard for the surrounding environment in which clients are treated through other therapies. Behavioural therapies in particular are regarded as somewhat discompassionate towards the client, and are not encouraged where the client is one with delicate sensibilities. It may be accurate to say the Carl Rogers was responsible for the first wave of successful counsellors, landing him the achievement of being one of the first most influential psychologists in America and worldwide. Rogers not only developed innovative techniques in the field of psychotherapy, but helped other professors in their research as well, writing up to sixteen books and an array of professional articles as well as research papers. In this paper, I will go through the criticisms as well as the advancements and advantages that Carl Roger's person-centred therapy has faced in the past, and the processes that are generally accepted in this line of therapy. There are several concepts that go hand in hand with person-centred therapy as well, which will be explored in this paper.

Discussion

The key feature of person centred therapy is that it focuses on the here and now, rather then link the clients behaviour to some childhood trauma or origin. It encourages the creation of an environment that is permissive as well as non-inverventionalist, that doesn't intimidate the client into changing their views in order to avoid being judged or criticized by the counsellor. Rogers believed that people are essentially trustworthy, and If allowed to move at a pace that they're comfortable with, they will open up completely to their counsellor, hence making the therapeutic part of counselling that much ...
