Psychological Well-Being

Introduction

Mental health promotion is a concept that aims to create stable living conditions and environments that enable individuals to maintain a normal lifestyle and share in the benefits of the state. These efforts include measures to increase the chances of more people living a normal health life with full mental well being and stability. The paper describe mental health promotion as promoting positive mental health by increasing psychological well-being, competence and resilience and by increasing supportive living conditions and environments.

The distinction between disease and mental health is controversial. In our view, both constructs are the positive and negative poles of a continuum that represents a dynamic process of the subject's interaction with its environment. This process is multi-determined by variables of different nature: biological, psychological and social.

The concept of 'mental health' given by Silvia Bermann confirms this idea before, "one might say that mental health is learning to transform reality through confrontation, integrative management and resolution of conflicts, both within the individual as that exist between himself and his environment. When this learning is disrupted or fails in the attempt of resolution, you can start talking about disease. "In similar vein, Pichon Riviere notes:" Mental health is seen as the ability to maintain the dialectical relationship and transformational world that allow resolve the internal contradictions of this individual and the social context "(Taylor, 1989).

Traditionally, however, the process of accessing mental health at the negative pole, obviously the need to give immediate solution to the problem of disease, predominantly in its approach to a medical approach psychopathology.

The study of the process of mental health in positive terms we refer to what has been named in the literature as Positive Psychology, and what many researchers call the new paradigm. Subjects examined in this perspective are: the sense of coherence, strength, learned self-efficacy, locus of control, resilience (resilience), mature defense mechanisms, psychological well-being, subjective well-being, the coping skills, talents and creativity. We focus our attention in this study on the issue of psychological well-being, as it is possible to characterize the satisfaction and happiness as indicators of good mental functioning, and that is why it becomes necessary to have tools to assess the psychological well-being (Taylor & Brown, 1988).

Discussion

Psychological well-being has been used synonymously with subjective well-being, in fact, both terms are closely related. Psychological well-being can be considered as part of welfare that makes up the psychological level, being the general welfare or subjective well-being which is composed of other influences, such as meeting needs of diverse nature, not psychological type. Psychological well-being transcends also the mood, although having reactive elements, ...
