In the classic novel, A Rose for Emily, William Faulkner certainly portrays Emily Grierson, the lead character of the story, as a strange and socially awkward character. Emily epitomizes the traits and mannerisms of the archetypal southern “eccentric” by being unmistakably unbalanced, overly tragic, and exhibiting bizarre behavior. It is almost impossible for readers of “A Rose for Emily” to read the entire story without taking out some time to examine Emily's character in a contextual and psychological light.
