Provisional restoration is an important component of permanent prosthodontic treatment. The literature regarding provisional restorations describes many procedures and materials for its fabrication. Provisional restoration is used as an essential phase in dental prosthetic treatment. Prepared teeth are restored temporarily and the ultimate prosthesis is fabricated. Satisfactory provisional restorations always fulfil these requirements; protects pulpal, easy cleaning, positional firmness, bear resistance, strength in dimension and also provide a diagnostic aid in assessment of aesthetics and treatment [1].
Discussion
It is said that the main purpose behind provisional restoration is to fulfil the aesthetic expectations of patients. That is why it is important for a dentist to understand the aesthetic expectations of patient and the patient must also understand the inbuilt restrictions of any kind of restorative therapy. Many modern materials are available for producing suitable provisional restoration with proper techniques such as Iso-Temp, 3M Dental, Temp-Phase etc. Most of these materials possess different reactions for multi-phase settings and are willingly trimmed during a rubbing phase. Generally confirmative dentistry uses these kinds of materials in which significant changes in shape, morphology and size of teeth are not taken into account [2].
There are two basic approaches for provisional restorations that are; they are prefabricated such as polycarbonate crowns and metal shells or they are custom made [2]. Custom made are prepared wither directly in the oral cavity of patient or indirectly in laboratory. When considering custom made or aesthetic provisional restorations, following approaches are used [3]:
A careful and systematic radiographic and clinical examination is conducted along with an inclusive dental history.
In detailed initial interview, main complaints and aesthetic expectations should be determined.
Permanent hydrocolloid and diagnostic sheds are used to make impressions in a suitable articulator.
Fabrication of provisional restoration is conducted by the use of matrices from the shadows to establish the restoration's morphology.
An impression is created of the satisfactory provision restorations on the satisfaction of patient regarding functions and aesthetics. Then this improved cast is used as a guide for final restoration [3].
Clinical Significance
For single implantation, provisional restoration is evolved from temporary methods during soft tissue assimilation and osseous to significant therapeutic tool that is used to evaluate expectations of patients, communicate with laboratory and bring about a perfect implantation treatment. Aesthetics can be influenced by the selection of appropriate type of provisional restoration during healing of soft tissues and implant integration period [1].
Purpose
There are three very important functions of provisional restoration. Firstly, an interim seal is provided for the tooth that is prepared. An excellent and proper surfacing profile supply a framework for strong maturation and preservation of the periodontal settings. When definitive restorations are to be bonded, this purpose becomes particularly important. Secondly, it provides an aesthetic preview to the patient. Aesthetic and functional considerations such as central dominance, golden proportion and incisal length can play an important role o satisfy both dentist and the patient. Thirdly, its purpose is to evaluate and test the occlusal schemes which include restoration of occlusal vertical proportions along with ...
