Introduction
Nursing faculty are the registered nurses (RN) having advance education, typically doctoral degree holder, who teach students of nursing. Nursing educators serve as teaching staff in nursing institutions and schools. They share their skills and knowledge in order to prepare the future generation of nurses for good practice. They keep themselves updated on the latest nursing technologies and methods. This reveals their importance in the field of nursing. The State of California in the US is facing severe shortage of nursing faculty in its nursing institutions. Consequently, the state is experiencing an extreme shortage of nursing professionals.
Nurses are required to have doctorate degree with them in order to become a faculty member at a four-year university or college. Doctoral programs are designed to prepare nurses to do research, teach and expand the scientific knowledge related to the field of nursing. Along with being difficult, challenging and requiring a long-term commitment to them, these programs prove to be costly for students. Several professional groups, government agencies, and non-profit organizations have launched various types of campaigns in order to encourage the youth to opt for a career in nursing education. Monetary support is provided to nurses in order to facilitate them in pursuing a doctoral degree in their field in exchange with the commitment to becoming a faculty member for BSN and MSN programs. However, the problem lies with the fact that nursing educators do not get enough salaries as those nurses who pursue their career in clinical practice.
Statement of Purpose
The shortage of nursing faculty in state of California is leading to shortages of nurses in the state. There are many reasons for this shortage ranging from retirements of aged nurses to decline of interest in the career of nursing (AACN, 2013). However, one of the main reasons remains to be the high costs associated with pursuing a doctoral degree in the field. There are several approaches to encourage nurses to pursue their careers in academia instead of clinical practice to overcome shortage of nursing faculty. One of them can be provisioning of monetary support for doctoral programs of nursing in exchange of a commitment to be employed in academia for BSN and MSN programs. There are several pros and cons relation to this approach. The funding can encourage students but at the same time the low level of salaries provided to nursing faculty can become a hindrance.
