Prostate cancer

Introduction

A disease in which cell growth goes out of control is known as cancer. Cancers are of over 100 different types, and each is identified by the cell that is initially affected. Cancer is one of the most dangerous diseases which harm the body, when the cells which damaged divide uncontrollably to form lumps or masses of tissue called tumors. Tumors grow and get in the way with the digestive system, nervous system and circulatory systems, and they discharge hormones that alter body function. The cells of cancers grow uncontrollably and they do not die, whereas, the normal cells grow, divide and then eventually die. Unlike these normal cells, cancer cells that grow uncontrollably, do not experience programmatic death, instead they keep growing inside the human body. Prostate cancer is cancer that starts in the gland. It develops when the cells in the body change and grow out of control. Many types of cancer form lumps or growths known as tumors. Most prostate cancers develop slowly, but there are some that are quicker to grow and spread.

Discussion

The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive gland that produces semen and carries sperm. Normally it is the size of a walnut (Huang et al., 2004). As a man gets older, if often becomes enlarged. More than half of all men over 60 have some enlargement. This is usually not caused by cancer, but by other problems. It is fifth common cancer in men (Zhu et al., 2010). It is so common these days that everyone out of seven men will be diagnosed prostate cancer. The health provider will feel for any unusual lumps or growths by pressing on it or by an internal rectal exam. The patients also suggested having a blood test to measure the level of prostate specific antigen (PSA). Higher levels than normal may mean that a tumor is present. However, high levels can also be caused by enlargement or an infection.

Symptoms

Often there are no symptoms in the early stages. If there are symptoms, they can vary, but may include issues with ejaculation, weak or interrupted flow or pain while urinating, blood in the urine or semen, or nagging back, hip or pelvis pain.
