CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
The concept of developing employee motivation in order to increase staff performance has always been considered as an intellectual research issue. Further, the management of motivational levels employees, for a long time, is also a significant issue because of its high impact on the levels of staff performance and company performance, as a whole. Such impact has resulted in a large amount of literature and theories on how to manage and improve staff motivation levels (Bassett-Jones, and Lloyd, 2005, pp. 929-43). The concept of understanding motivation and to improve motivational levels of diverse employees is a significant concept as it helps the managers to improve staff performance levels (Mullins, 2010, pp. n.d). There could be various factors of motivation, and it is widely believed that the performance level of employees is largely dependent upon factors such as, ability, skills and understanding of job requirements. The performance level of employee is also dependent upon various motivational factors. However, it is also widely believed that the increasing levels of diversity at workplace has highlighted the dire need for understanding the factors of motivation in order to improve the performance levels of employees at workplace (Public Affairs Ireland , 2010, pp. n.d). There are many theories available on improving the motivation level of employees, but there is limited prior research on the effect of increasing motivation levels on staff performance. Hence, the issue of managers to motivate staff in the private sector is considered as a challenging, yet rewarding issue, because if fully understood, it can be used as a management tool to improve performance levels of employees to gain a competitive edge, which can be a determinant for success or failure for the company, sometimes (Robbins and Judge, 2008, pp. n.d). It can be argued that management techniques can be evolved in a way to gain control of the work environment, by employing the right staff with right set of abilities and with a comprehensive understanding of task as hand (Torrington et al., 2010, pp. n.d). This research study is targeted at Synergy Health Plc. which is a medium company in the health sector with branches in several countries, which therefore, makes the relationship a bit more complex due to a complex mix of cultures in the work place.
