Purpose of the Project

The project to be completed is regarding expansion in the Information Technology (IT) infrastructure of the company in order to fulfill the anticipated requirements for the future. The current 10 terabyte data warehouse of the company is expected to grow at a rate of 20% per annum and therefore would fall short of fulfilling the increasing requirements. Therefore, this project is aimed at performing the required expansion and up gradations of the present IT infrastructure(Iyer & Henderson, 2010).

Background including current process

At present, the company is utilizing web analytical tools to a great extent. Since the company was established just a couple of years ago, it lacks a sound Information Technology management staff. Furthermore, the annual growth rate of the company calls on the need for appropriate expansion in its IT infrastructure (Rainer, 2008). This project is to have expansion in the existing IT infrastructure of the company that would be insufficient in future.

The project goal is to enable the company to cope up with the increasing requirements of the IT services and capabilities by performing necessary expansion. As a result, the company performance is likely to improve. The IT role for this project is to increase the existing data storage capacity of the company that is currently based on MS Access and to enhance its operational systems. Moreover, the enhancement of the analytical tools utilized by the company would also be performed. It is expected that this will greatly enhance the company's IT related performance (Jamil , 2011).

The company has specifically addressed the issue of security in this expansion project. The company has planned to include the security standards in its developing infrastructure of Information Technology. In current era, databases are prone to cyber attacks and can cause huge losses to their companies. This project would comply with the standards of the IT security that are set aside by international organizations, such as International Standardization Organization (ISO). It is expected that these measures would prove to be very helpful in securing the company's IT infrastructure including the databases from possible cyber attacks (Rainer, 2008).

History

For this project proposal we have chosen Wal-Mart company. Wal-Mart is one of the leading retail chains of stores and a multinational corporation because of its presence in global markets and operations selected considering worldwide approaches and perspectives. However, according to the results of the Fortune Magazine 2003, and after obtaining the poll of 10, 000 financial analysts, business executives and board directors that are located in 25 countries around the world, Wal-Mart is not only considered as the largest corporation of the world but it is also the world's most admired company.
