Introduction

As a manager in a criminal justice agency, it is my duty to ensure that all my subordinates are medically and psychologically fit for duty. If, for any reason, they make an incorrect decision that affects the safety and well being of themselves and those they are meant to protect, it is a direct reflection on my managerial skills and the department's efficiency as a unit. The other day, while having a word with Officer Joe, I noticed a distinct odor of alcohol.

Has my officer been drinking? Is it affecting his judgment? Is he capable of continuing duty responsibly? These are only a few of the questions that popped into my mind. The dilemma I find myself in is that the said officer has been praised for his dedication and performance earlier, and calling him out might be taken wrongly by not only him, but the department as well. The situation at hand requires detailed research and planning as to how the matter should be addressed. The purpose of this paper is to observe possible causes to the problem. How the problem might affect the police organization. Based on this, what my priorities as a manager are, what options are available the potential solutions and indications of the solution being a success or a failure.

Problem and Possible Cause

Research into the individual's behavior revealed that recently, Officer Joe exhibited rebellious behavior and repeatedly violated department rules. His appearance was disheveled and was rude and disrespectful to his colleagues. The worst in the list of offenses was the smell of alcohol. One can simply not constitute such behavior to having a bad day. Had the officer been having a bad day, the behavior would not have lasted so long. The possibility still does exist however and if it truly is the reason behind his behavior, it should not be tolerated. His responsibilities should be taken from him until he is over whatever it is that is bothering him. His rude behavior can get in the way of dealing properly with witnesses, convicts and his colleagues. A man in charge of dealing with crime should not be overly aggressive, should always remain calm and should be able to act and think quickly and responsibly (Parker et al, 2004). Factors that diminish these qualities should be dealt with immediately.

Another possible cause might be a developing alcohol habit. Though not a highly developed habit, based on the symptoms seen, alcoholism should not be tolerated the least bit. It affects the individual's judgment, thought process and physical movement. If the individual is under the influence of alcohol, he is not only putting others in danger, but himself too. The most common reason for turning to alcohol is a tragic incident. In the field of criminal investigations, such an incident is quite likely to occur. It is quite possible that Officer Joe was forced to make a decision that he regrets and is unable ...
