Project Management and Control

Project Management and Control

Introduction

In this paper, we intend to compare the three case studies i.e. “Particular barriers and issues associated with projects in a developing and emerging economy”, “Winning the Sydney to Hobart” and the “Quensal Air Terminal”. In order to better understand the project management techniques we need to develop a familiarity with the objectives of the case study.

The three case studies are different in their respect and include an improvised approach to project management. For instance, in the study “Particular barriers and issues associated with projects in a developing and emerging economy” it attempts to explore the prime causes and speculated solutions to counter water based and irrigation issues. The differences in the case studies is evident, hence the approaches implied to deal with issue of project management would be different. A thorough analysis of the three given studies indicate that features of project management i.e. initiation, control and planning are used many times. However, the projects seem to be quite different.

The distinction in the given case studies i.e. “Quensal Air Terminal” building an air terminal, “Winning the Sydney to Hobart” is about winning a race. While in “Particular barriers and issues associated with projects in a developing and emerging economy” is based on dealing with irrigation issues in Nigeria. Hence, all three case studies incorporated different elements of management for their completion.

Overview of the 3 Case Studies

Quensal Air Terminal

The case study “Quensal Air Terminal” involved the construction of a new terminal with a “Cariboo theme” in Canada. It was a complex task and held multi-faceted challenges i.e. economical, developmental and transitional.

Winning the Sydney to Hobart

The case study “Winning the Sydney to Hobart” is entirely different and focuses on the different elements of winning a race. A project management plan was set up to achieve the goal. The plan involved the initiation, development and execution of the process. In our discussion we would analyze the similarities and differences in the two case studies.

Barriers and Issues in a Developing Economy

Due to economic and social issues in the country, Nigeria houses a number of abandoned projects. In the case study, the authors have attempted to identify the prime causes of the abandonment in Nigeria. They have also proposed remedial procedures to counter the issues. The solutions were studied in a comparison of major regional water and irrigation projects as case studies. Different parameters were also identified and assessed to determine the hurdles in project completion.

The elements discussed included the processes of funding, allocation, the conditions on which contracts are offered, laws in Nigeria and their enactment, the management techniques and inflationary trends.

Despite ensuring strict project management, the successful completion of the projects was hindered by various factors in the cases study. Some of the common hindrances included inadequate sources of funding, price differences and corruption. Feasible remedial procedures to overcoming such barriers included incorporating alternative sources of funding, division of projects into phases and reviewing the clauses in the proposed ...
