Professionalism in the Lifelong Learning Sector

Introduction

The lifelong learning sector is a process of continuous knowledge and skills building all through the individual's life. These LLS occurs through the lifelong experiences of the individual. These experiences can either be formal (higher education, apprenticeship, mentorship, tutoring, counseling, training etc.) or they can be informal (life experiences, autodidacticism etc.) the educational institutes teaches the basics to the different subjects to an individual while the life experiences are the ones that teaches the individuals real life lessons which the individual remembers more than what he was taught in the educational institutions.

My LLS has been both formal and informal. I have learned a lot from my life experiences and through my formal education I received from the educational institutions. My role as a in the professional field is that of a teacher/ trainer. I train and guide at the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). I teach the Level 2 diploma in Health and Social Care (adults) for England. I train the adults to help them develop and enhance their working abilities. The adults will be able to credit their qualification and will benefit their existing employers as well as their future employers. My LLS is a private sector which facilitates the individuals in attaining further skills and abilities.

Theories and Models of Professionalism and Reflective Practice

There are many theories and models which have been devised in the education and professional field. The different models and theories are discussed below as well as my role as a professional in LLS.

My Role in LLS

The teachers/ trainers play a vital role in the process of development for the individuals. They have to work very hard to make sure that the best in everyone is enhanced and highlighted (Lynch, 1992, pp. 35). The individuals are given the tasks or assignments as per the best ability in the person, so that he/she performs the tasks in an effective way. The role of the teacher/ trainer is similar to that of a manager. As a teacher/ trainer, I work as a negotiator, resource allocator, disturbance handler, entrepreneur, liaison, leader, figurehead, spokesperson and disseminator, as well as a monitor of the students.

Social Contract Theory

The theory of social contract established a basic principle in an historic notion that legitimate state authority must be derived from the consent of the governed. The starting position for most of these theories - a heuristic study of the human condition that is not in any organized social system, which is usually called a "natural state". In these circumstances, a person's actions are related only to his personal power, limited conscience, and without opposition (Polito, 2005, pp. 23). From this starting position of the various conventional proponents of social contract theory in different ways try to explain why in a rational self-interest to voluntarily renounce human freedom, which everyone has in their natural state to take advantage of the political order.
