Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to critically appraise the two articles “Association between muscular strength and mortality in men: prospective cohort study” and “Muscular strength in male adolescents and premature death: cohort study of one million participants”. This paper aims to target certain key points in these two articles related to muscular strength of men and mortality. Today, low muscular strengths in men are bringing mortality at low age and, it is important to recognize it at early stages. Therefore, this report is essential in highlighting important points related to low muscular strengths and mortality.

Swedish researchers who followed more than a million adolescents mainly include boys for 24 years and found that those who had low muscle strength were more likely to have premature death than other volunteers. The research, published in the British Medical Journal on November 20, was conducted by experts from various institutions such as the University Of Granada, Spain, and the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden (Kodama et al, 2009, pp. 2024-35). The respondents were aged between 16 and 19 when the study began (Ruiz et al, 2009, pp. 349). Throughout the analysis, 26,145 men died. The main causes of death were accidental injury, followed by suicide, cancer, heart diseases and strokes. Even taking into account other risk factors, the link between muscle strength and life expectancy remained questionable. All went through a battery of exercises to assess muscle strength (Gale et al, 2002, pp. 332-338). The results show that men who were classified as having muscle strength showed an above-average risk between 20 and 35% lower premature mortality due to any cause Williams et al, 2004, pp. 571-587). They also had a 65% lower risk of being diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses such as; schizophrenia or depression.
