Introduction

Nursing is an essential part of the health care system. It not only involves quality patient care but also a trust that a doctor has in nursing professionals. This assignment will argue about the impact of IOM report 2010, on nursing which includes the impact on nursing education, nursing practices and nurse role as a leader.

Impact on Nursing Education

Education is the most significant aspect of life, and it becomes extremely important if anyone wants to join health care system. Nurses are playing an essential role in health care settings so it is much important to have well educated and well trained nurses. According to IOM report, for maintaining quality patient care, it is necessary to have well educated nurses that benefits professional health capacity and patients. This report has a great impact on nursing education in a positive way. Those who wants to join this profession, they should come with a high level quality education and training from reputable education system. It is the most unique thing that there are three pathways through which an individual can become registered nurse. The pathways are BSN, ADN and Diploma to Nursing. Thrice of them are undergraduate programs and prepare quality level nurses (Johnson, 2011).

After clearing the pathway, now an individual should pass National council licensure examination for registered nurses to get a license. Basic health care and education of nurses will depend on increasing the number of BSN-prepared nurses. Enhanced roles and nursing scope will not be achieved unless this is met. If this target will be achieved, then it will help to meet future demands for nurses advanced practice positions and competencies. The impact of this report is that now trained and qualified faculty is being hiring in nursing schools to prepare well-educated nurses for health care profession. The report mentioned a barrier that incentives are few to get further education for nurses.

This point leads to several scholarship programs that began for nurses for their advance education. Government is also adjusting the market based salary of faculty. ACA has initiated urgent care center in hospitals and community settings, this makes a revolution in the nursing profession. In addition to this, many nursing schools are now updating their curriculum to prepare students for employment in acute care setting which is also a great step (Johnson, 2011).
