Introduction

Healthcare homes should protect people's privacy, improve service delivery, cater to the needs of individuals, respect patients and hire competent staff to ensure better service delivery. Healthcare homes should measure their performance of service delivery against the standards being set by the UK Government. It's important that healthcare homes encourage promoting its staff's professional developments.

1.1) Professional Development

For organizations to succeed, they need to implement a learning culture with intense emphasis given to on the job training. In order to meet the client's needs and for workers to improve their knowledge, continual learning is vital. Care workers should be fully aware of the current guidelines, standards and appropriate legislations applicable to their work setting. Managers should take responsibility for keeping their employees up to date with all the new standards and legislations taking place under the GSCC Code.

A few days back an annual meeting was held between the healthcare staff and management, to determine why staff is leaving and why aren't they working up to the mark. It has been found that staff feels that management doesn't give the much importance as their input is not taken on vital decisions. Staffs are not satisfied with pay scale, the management decided to address these issues by rising pay scale and implementing 360 degree feedback evaluation.

1.2) Barriers to Professional Development

Barriers that pose serious threat to professional development includes personal barriers where social care workers feel overconfidence in their own abilities and feel they don't need to undergo trainings to improve their services. Other personal barriers such as low appreciation from employer may pose hindrance towards professional development. The healthcare workers may be suffering from low self esteem.

Then there are time bounded barriers. If social care workers have some family and other commitments, they may not be able to focus well on their work. Financial barriers in the form of having low budgets or the training venue not within the reach of the employees, can pose a barrier towards professional development.

Recently the health care staffs have started fighting with the management for implementing paid holidays. A meeting was chaired addressing the needs of healthcare workers, it was decided in the organizations best interest that paid leave is allowed bit staff would have to raise their standards of service.

1.3) Source of Professional Development

For healthcare staff, a wide array of support exists for professional development. Healthcare staff can avail these sources through their organization or through their own sources. The sources include Staff meetings, Books, Appraisal, nursing journals, mentoring. Other sources include information leaflets, conference, E learning, in house trainings, college courses, relevant care organizations and from recognized bodies such as CQC, HS etc. For these sources to be useful, healthcare staff should decide as per what suits their needs best.
