Introduction

Whenever an individual suffer from any sort of illness he or she relies on health service providers. Various members of the health care setting play their part in improving mental and physical well being of an individual. One of the most significant components of health care service providers are nurses.

“Constant attention by a good nurse may be just as important as a major operation by a surgeon”. These are the words of Dag Hammarskjold (the ex-President of USA) truly expressing the importance of the role of a nurse. Nurses play their integral role in facilitating a patient effectively and efficiently. This paper revolves around the professionalism of nurses. Different issues related to the profession of the nurses are discussed in this paper.

Proper/effective communication of nurses

Healthcare communication is defined as the process of communication that creates a connection between numerous healthcare clients and teams regarding issues that are related to healthcare. Health is an emerging area within the field of nursing communication. Health communication includes the practice and study of communication strategies to prevent diseases or illness, and to promote individual and public health or quality of life. Communication in nursing is considered to be in the centre as it is necessary to provide support. Effective communication is applicable to the nursing and care communication, as it allows a boulevard for accomplishing goals in health care settings. The lack of effective communication in the field of nursing can lead to poor patient outcomes and a hostile and unproductive work environment (Begley, 2010).

The nurse-client relationship is one of the building blocks on which nursing practice is built. Registered nurses are expected to behave, interact and communicate in a professional manner and demonstrate professional presence at all times. The nurse-patient relationship involves communicating effectively with patients to provide information, but it also requires that the nurse listen well to understand the patient's needs and concerns, discern what information is most influential and useful to the patient, and provide information in a way that is understandable to the patient. The nurse-patient relationship occurs in all settings in which nurses' care for patients, including inpatient, outpatient, and home care settings.

All healthcare professionals can practice communication skills that can establish a positive relationship with the patient, and these skills can be used by assistive nursing staff, as well. Confidentiality is always a concern in nurse-patient relationships, therefore; the patient and nurse must determine if it is appropriate for family members and other caretakers to be present during discussions.

Establishing a positive nurse-patient relationship promotes quality patient care by the following means:

1.Promoting patient trust which can decrease, the patient's anxiety, improve patient communication, and adherence to the plan of care.

2.Promoting clear communication between the nurse and patient can result in more effective patient teaching and help patient's voice concerns and questions about their care.

3.Improved communication promotes more effective patient care, potentially reducing patient complications and conserving hospital resources.
