Introduction

The main purpose of this paper is to Production Patterns in Less Developed Countries. This paper selects the one less developed country and one more developed country and then making their comparisons based on the geography, population, distribution, education levels, health and ethnic issues, agricultural products, major industries, import and export, trade partners and balance of trade (Daily c1997). This paper also compares the distribution of industrial and service centre. The less developed country selected in this paper is Ethiopia, and more developed country is India.

Geography of countries including resources, climate, and transportation

India covers an area of 1,269,219 square miles and is estimated to be one third size of United States. Near the northern borders of India, Himalaya Mountains are positioned. These mountains are termed as the tallest mountains in the world. The most heavily populated area of India is the fertile Ganges Plain which is situated in the South of Himalayas. India is blessed with mineral and other resources like water, electricity and gas. India is included among world's top countries in the natural resources. Almost half of India's land is under cultivation, and about one-fourth is covered with forests (Daily 2002).

Climate of India is categorized into three basic seasons, one is summer which is hot, and the second one is rainy which comes in June and remains till October, third one is winter which starts in November and remains till February. In summer, the normal temperature of the country is 40°F (4°C), in winter, it remains above 100°F (40°C). These temperatures vary according to their region.

India's transportation system is going average. In Urban areas, roads are well developed, but in rural areas, they are broken and unpaved mostly in heavy rains. The main medium of transportation in India is buses, which are mostly overcrowded (Daly 1996).

Ethiopia is a country, surrounded by lands and mountains on the Horn of Africa. Ethiopia covers a land area of 426,373 square miles, and this area is almost the size of California and Texas combined. Through a port in Djibouti, it is linked to the Red Sea. There is a variety of climates and terrains in Ethiopia. The Great Rift valley of Ethiopia is considered as the place of earthquakes and is a separator between the north western highlands and south eastern mountains. Ethiopia is located at a height of 8,000 feet (2,400 meters). The climate of Ethiopia is moderate, in some areas like the western lowlands; it averages 95°F (35°C) but can rise to 120°F (49°C). The temperatures in the areas of highlands fluctuate between 60°F (16°C) and 74°F (23°C). Period of June to September is the rainy season; whereas, period of October to February is very dry.
