REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) started out in 1938 as a cooperative of 25 mountain climbers who wanted to buy quality climbing gear. Today it remains a member-owned cooperative offering quality outdoor gear. Non-members may shop at REI, while members can earn a 10% annual dividend, obtain an REI Visa Card with its own REI rebate, and enjoy other special members-only offers. REI is also very active in the outdoor community with its grants program, volunteer projects, and youth programs.
