Introduction

Innovation is a multidimensional and complex procedure which has gained the attention in every field by the researchers because of its contribution to the financial development, quality of life and competitiveness. In general terms, innovation is the establishment and adoption of novel knowledge for the order of improving the value of services, processes, and products. In construction services, innovation has been acknowledged by industry practitioners as well as the policy makers as a means of competitive advantage.

Chosen Topic: BIM

The construction industry at all times has been amongst the driving factors behind the economic development; nevertheless it has also been disparaged since a long time due to its lack of effectiveness and competence compared to other fields and its reluctance towards innovation. This paper highlights a process improvement related innovation called BIM and demonstrates its implementation in the construction industry. Building information modeling or BIM is a model based, intelligent procedure which adds value all through the entire lifecycle of projects related to infrastructure and building. The dependence on the digital design models has been a widespread practice in the construction industry for several years. All the various aspects of its implementation in relation to the relative theories together with the tremendous range of benefits it imparts to the organization in particular and to the construction industry in general are included in this report.

Innovation Process

Innovation is referred to as one of the major elements contributing towards the enhanced living standards, competitiveness, and economic growth of the nation and lies at the core of the knowledge based economy. Nevertheless, innovation does not have a complete and a single definition. The department of trade and industry in the United Kingdom states that innovation is the effective utilization of novel concept and ideas and that it is the major business procedure for effectively competing in the progressively competitive global environment. For instance, innovation is classified as radical, architectural, mo0dular, and incremental, on the basis of the degree of architectural/product knowledge needed for implementation (Barlow, 2000, pp.973-989).

The innovation, in the UK market may adopt numerous forms counting in paradigm innovation which changes in the fundamental models framing the activities of the organization; position innovation which changes the context in which the services or products are instituted; process innovation which changes in the styles of their manufacture and delivery; and product innovation which changes in the services or products. Non technological innovation; i.e., marketing and organizational innovation, is distinguished from technological innovation by the theorists and scholars. Technological innovations entail the implementation of technologically novel processes and products and the important technological enhancements in the processes and products.
