Introduction

In this paper, we will have a discussion over the four main types of prisons for adults in detail. The four main types of prisons for adults are state, federal, military and municipal. The federal prison is managed and operated by government of the country. These prisons generally house inmates who are convicted of the crime in which they have been violated of a federal statue as compared to the local or state laws. On the other hand, the municipal prison is known as a prison of high security.

As far as the military prison is concerned, it is a prison that is operated by military of the country. These prisons are used to house the prisoners of enemy combatants of war, whose freedom is considered as a security risk by the national or military authority. The fourth one is the state prison which is operated by state and is used for housing and rehabilitating the criminals. There are both, maximum and minimum security prisons, which are based on the crime's nature of the criminals. The paper will discuss all of these prisons in detail in the next section.

Discussion

The total institution is a facility which is separated from the society, where the residents spend all of the aspects of their lives. These institutions are small societies which evolve around their own distinct styles of life and values, and it pressurized its inhabitants for rigidly fulfilling the prescribed roles of behavior. Some of the total institutions are concentrated camps, prisons, seminaries, mental hospital and other facilities where people are separated from the society either willingly or forcibly (Engdahl, 2010). Prisons play a vital role in criminal justice system since they keep the offenders that commit crimes off the street. The prison also helps the community for being safe, secure and less violent. The prisons are used in terms of punishment either short term or long term depending on the crime's severity. Prisons are so important in the criminal justice system since if they are not available, the crimes would be overrated and the people who break the law would get no punishments and they would be committing crimes over and over again (Walmsley, 2010).
