Introduction

In today's world; issues of prison overcrowding have become a serious problem. In a broader context, the issue of prison overcrowding is not new; in fact many countries have faced similar issues in their criminal justice systems. Interventions at both National and International level have taken place to deal with issues of prison overcrowding. In this essay, we intend to discuss the issues of prison overcrowding, the causes behind the phenomenon, modern prisons and the measures which could be taken to improve the situation.

If we analyze modern prisons, it is evident that overcrowding has long been a vital characteristic of prisons across the globe. Most often, issues of overcrowding in prisons occur due to an insufficiency of allocated funds for their infrastructure and development. Probably, prisons are the most ignored institutions across most societies. The notion of State and Federal prisons was put forward in the Nineteenth century. Presently, issues of overcrowding have become common in California and the governmental authorities are seeking ways to deal with the issue. The United States has the highest prison population across the world.

Discussion

A number of multi-faceted societal issues occur due to overcrowding in prisons. These issues affect the society as a whole. In prison settings, overcrowding leads to spread of diseases and infections. Also, it can lead to a vast array of administrative and disciplinary issues. Fights are a common feature in overcrowded prisons; often these fights result in casualties and have long term social effects. Adverse experiences in incarceration not only effect prison settings, but also influence the quality of life in societies. When released, inmates indulge in revengeful activities to get even with people.

The issues of prison overcrowding have gained momentum in the United States. An increased attention is being paid to prison infrastructures and housing issues. However, concrete measures need to be taken to deal with issues in American prisons. Prisons are meant to serve their eternal purpose i.e. correction of society and reduction in crimes. Hence, the government should take adequate steps aimed at improving the criminal justice system. Prison overcrowding does not necessarily occur due to administrative issues. In fact, the process of prosecution also needs to be improved.

Prison overcrowding has an adverse impact on the conditions of imprisonment and the perceived results of imprisonment under the criminal justice system. Issues resulting due to prison overcrowding should be identified; thoroughly analyzed and remedial procedures must be put in place to counter the issues. On a personal level, overcrowding is directly associated with a loss of privacy and elements of human dignity. Adverse living conditions in prisons due to overcrowding induce anger and hatred among prisoners and hinder the intended outcomes of their incarceration.

Most importantly, prison overcrowding limits the authorities' attempts to provide quality services to prisoners. The resources are not well managed and hence equal access to food and recreational activities cannot be assured.
